My Story

Ms. Elicia Chaverest is the Assistant Director of the Small Farms Research Center at Alabama A&M University in Normal, Alabama. She has nearly 17 years of experience working with socially disadvantaged, limited resource minority farmers and landowners, non-profit organization and agribusinesses throughout the state of Alabama on pertinent agricultural issues. Among her duties, Ms. Chaverest directs and coordinates the development and implementation of outreach and risk management education programs; documents and disseminates finding to administrators, policy makers, funding agencies, producers and rural entrepreneurs; and identifies key priority areas in program implementation and outreach delivery. She works very closely with community leaders and extension agents in developing a well-rounded program suitable for the target audience. Ms. Chaverest is a strong believer of the university’s motto “Service is Sovereignty.” She is fully committed to educating and empowering under-represented communities and making sure they are updated on the new polices, and programs available to assist them with their farm operation.
In addition, Ms. Chaverest professional interests are in business planning and economic development, public policies, marketing strategies, access to capital and funding opportunities, personal finance, food safety and managing agricultural risk. She has presented at many professional organizations (locally and regionally) and continues to be a driving force in being an AGRO- advocate in promoting agriculture, especially advocating for more women in agriculture and ag. Careers.
Ms. Chaverest is passionate about working within the socially disadvantaged communities and making a difference within these underserved communities. She obtained her Bachelor of Science (2001) and Master of Science (2003) in Agribusiness Management from Alabama A&M University. She has done further studies in marketing strategies and executive leadership at Cornell University. Currently, she’s enrolled in the Tennessee Valley Leadership Diversity Colloquium program (Expected completion date: April 30, 2019.
